THE NEWEST #EXPOEAST TREND: CLIMATE ACTION

Recap of Expo East 2017

From breakfast briefings to happy hours, the enthusiasm for climate action was palpable at last week’s Expo East. In the midst of the bustling trade show floor, we witnessed a passionate, fast-growing community of natural products manufacturers, retailers, distributors and brokers coming together to act on climate.

I love Expo East.

At Natural Products Expo East 2016, Climate Collaborative founders Lara Jackle Dickinson of OSC2 and Katherine DiMatteo of the Sustainable Food Trade Association presented their concept in a panel discussion (along with three supporting brands). The 75-minute session filled most of the 80 seats in the far hallway of the Baltimore convention center as the panel shared their idea: to feed the craving for coordinated industry action to address global warming.

It’s time to lead on climate issues!

The natural products industry can leverage its power to reverse climate change.

Climate change is here. We’re already feeling its effects, whether it’s an extended drought, three “hundred year” storms in the span of five years, a maple sugaring season that starts in early January, rising sea levels, or an unprecedentedly vicious hurricane season.…

Thank you to all who made it out on November 3 for our latest community event, For the Love of Dirt, which focused on the power of regenerative agriculture. The message was clear. The time for us all to act is now, and the solution is literally under our feet! Thank you to our panelists for sharing their insights:

John Roulac, CEO of Nutiva – the First-Mover, who helped first introduce the idea of regenerative agriculture to many of us within the industry

Cowbells are Ringing at Esca Bona

A marquis event we can take further

By Lara Dickinson, Co-Founder OSC2
I set out for Austin, TX on Monday to participate in Esca Bona again, the second annual event. New Hope asked me to speak on the Climate Collaborative – the newest OSC2 collaborative.

Esca Bona is a small show- 278 people and capped.  It is more of an industry rally designed to capture the early spirit of Expo West when it was small, fun and cohesive because natural foods was a new and renegade industry.   …

OSC2 Nebraska Farm Tour!

By:  Lara Dickinson

October 10, 2016

The OSC2 compostable packaging collaborative set off for Omaha Nebraska on the last weekday in September for special farm tour.  Our goal was to better understand NatureWorks compostable packaging  material and how they work to address Corn GMO inputs.  A potential outcome of this could be additional packaging components and new structures that allow a greater diversity of materials to address the current issues we are facing with window haze and (perhaps more importantly) pricing.…

Business Collaboration in Action

Ushering in the new Low Carbon Economy

OSC2 will be speaking at several events over the next few months regarding food companies that are collaborating on climate change reversal efforts.

Most agree that we are already feeling the effects of climate change. But while climate change is one of the biggest risks we’ve ever faced, it’s also one of our greatest opportunities.

A special dinner with Bay Area food leaders

Over the summer, Pei-ru Ko from Real Food Real Stories reached out to ask me to collaborate with her on a private dinner which would also serve as a curated storytelling event.  To be honest, it wasn’t a great time to ask.  We were in the guts of the Alaskan fishing season.

Scaling with Authenticity – Intimate Perspective from 3 Mission-Driven Food CEOs Who Have Done It

Last week, I led a panel on a topic that matters to a lot of people: entrepreneurs, investors, consumers and big CPG leaders.

Scaling with Authenticity PanelWe talked about scaling a company while maintaining a mission-driven DNA and rich culture. We call it “passion” for short. The challenge, that I have observed, is that there is a real tension between passion and process.

So we gathered three inspiring entrepreneurial CEOs who have each had an experience with scaling their companies successfully.…

Member Alter Eco Receives NBJ Stewardship Award for Full-Circle Sustainability

More congrats are in order for Alter Eco… following its Expo West Nexty Award, the company has been honored by the Nutrition Business Journal this week with its Stewardship Award.

The article mentions the role OSC2 has made in the collaboration and partnership toward addressing what I constantly refer to as the “Achilles Hell of the packaging industry” and it also educates the reader regarding the importance and challenges in addressing packaging.…
